Mesothelioma info

Mesothelioma is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide uncontrolably. These cells infiltrate and damage tissues and organs that are close by. Cancer cells can also spread from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum. It is linked with asbestos exposure and smoking. Since mesothelium lacks tight junctions it is prone to shredding during surgery. When this occurs, the exposed surface can develop adhesions with other surfaces which can lead to intraabdominal or rarely intrathoracal adhesions.
